An education course titled Essentials of Testing and Control of Microbial Quality of Nonsterile Drug Substances and Products was held at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Jakarta on Monday, April 8th, 2019 and Thursday, April 11th, 2019 at Grand Park Orchard Hotel, Singapore. It was initiated by GeneCraft Labs cooperated with United States Pharmacopeial (USP).
This course was held with the aim to increase awareness and knowledge in pharmaceutical industry, especially in microbial quality testing and control. Dr. Radhakrishna Tirumalai, Ph.D., a Principal Scientific Liaison who has been a part of USP since 2003, was the keynote speaker.
The highlight of this course was to understand every step of the quality control process–which is, of course, very important–that has been done by drug manufacturers in Indonesia. By doing that, the results would not only very useful for quality control afterwards, but also for research development of particular products.
Furthermore, this course gave insights about microbiological testing, biological validation methods and sterilization, variability in plate count method, etc. Tirumalai also said that the importance of controlling and testing microbial quality could lead researchers to identify and determine the amount of microorganisms in some products, thus allowing producers or manufacturers to provide us good quality products for daily life–whether in pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, foods and beverages, consumer goods, or even lab testing.
In Jakarta, this course was attended by 60 participants. It started in the morning and was opened by Director of GeneCraft Labs, Teddy Gunawan Joedistira. The participants looked so enthusiastic during the course, even asking endless questions to the speaker. As a token of our appreciation, GeneCraft Labs then gave some souvenirs to those who asked. Some of them were representatives of PT Megasari Makmur, BPOMRI, PT Darya Varia Laboratoria, PT Supra Ferbindo Farma, PT Rohto Laboratories Indonesia, PT Bernofarm, PT Dexa Medica, PT Kalbe Farma, PT Ultra Sakti, PT Kimia Farma Tbk, PT Bintang Toedjoe, and PT Combiphar. Meanwhile in Singapore, this course was attended by 23 participants. They came from some companies such as Menicon Singapore Pte. Ltd., SG Lens Pte. Ltd., Sanofi-Aventis Singapore Pte. Ltd., Baxter Healthcare, and Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp.
